In December 2025, UNESCO officially inscribed Icelandic swimming pool culture onto the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Swimming pool culture refers to the widespread use of heated outdoor pools. Despite cold climates, these spaces remain popular, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. People visit the pools for various reasons, such as to exercise, relax or socialize.

Powered heavily by the country’s geothermal energy, most pools are operated by municipalities for the community, ensuring they remain highly accessible and affordable year-round. To maintain water quality without heavy chemicals, a strict rules which require all visitors to shower thoroughly without a swimsuit before entering the pool.
